DPO 360 Africa celebrates the Launch of the Data Protection Manual for Non-Profit Organizations in Kenya

On 2nd October, nine months of work culminated in a successful book launch at the Radisson Blu hotel in Upperhill. The gathering was full of consultants, experts, students and civil society actors.

Opening Address from Amnesty International Kenya

The event kicked off with a brief but substantive address from the Head of Programmes at Amnesty International Kenya, Victor Ndede. He narrated their journey in advancing data protection through grassroots campaigns and trainings. He stressed the need for the toolkit, which translates regulatory requirements into practical, actionable steps that local communities and organizations can adopt. He also highlighted the challenges faced during the trainings, the major one being communication breakdown caused by language barriers, with some information lost in translation.

The Team Behind the Manual

We then heard from the writers and researchers of the manual, including our very own Chief Privacy Officer, Philip Kisaka. The manual is a multi-organizational collaboration between Amnesty International Kenya, Icon Data and Learning Labs and DPO 360 Africa. Titled Data Protection Manual for Non-Profit Organizations in Kenya, it provides a practical toolkit for ensuring compliance with data protection obligations and standards within civil society and not-for-profit organizations.

What the Manual Covers

  • The meaning of privacy and data protection
  • The principles of data protection
  • Lawful bases for processing personal data
  • Rights of data subjects
  • Obligations of data handlers
  • Consequences of non-compliance
  • Cross-border data transfers
  • How to set up a privacy program
  • The regulator, the ODPC

Why it Matters

This toolkit is an important, if not necessary, addition for any non-profit organization seeking full compliance with statutory obligations and consumer trust. The project also showcases the benefits of collaboration and self-regulation within an industry, inspiring public confidence and ensuring continuous capacity building of various actors.
