NDPC Slams Fidelity Bank with N555.8 Million Fine for Data Privacy Violations

Abuja, Nigeria – In a major blow to data privacy in Nigeria, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has slapped Fidelity Bank PLC with a hefty fine of N555.8 million. The penalty comes after an investigation revealed the bank’s blatant disregard for data protection regulations.

The NDPC’s probe was triggered by a complaint from a customer whose personal information was collected without proper consent. A deep dive into Fidelity Bank’s data processing practices uncovered a litany of violations, including the collection of data without informed consent, the use of cookies and banking apps in contravention of the law, and reliance on non-compliant third-party data processors.

Despite repeated warnings and ample opportunities to rectify its transgressions, Fidelity Bank remained unmoved. The NDPC’s patience eventually ran out, leading to the imposition of the hefty fine. The commission emphasized the importance of data accountability and compliance, not only for organizations themselves but also for their vendors and contractors.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, issued a stern warning to data controllers and processors, urging them to prioritize data protection and avoid actions that could undermine public trust. He stressed the crucial role of data privacy in fostering economic growth and sustainable development.

The NDPC’s action serves as a clear message to businesses operating in Nigeria that data privacy is not a mere formality but a legal obligation. Failure to comply with the country’s data protection laws will result in severe consequences.
